James is known for helping clients make clear, confident decisions, especially when projects get a little complex. For him, architecture is about meaningful connections between people and place, favouring a client-centric outlook to achieve the best outcomes.
James has invested decades following his curiosity and love of learning, including five years working in the UK, which has shaped the way his studio operates today. This vast experience and perspective fuel a reputation for being a trusted advisor to clients and project collaborators.
He runs a solo Sydney-based practice and has a deep interest in how the landscape can shape and inspire the buildings he creates. His design work is meticulously guided by pillars of sustainability, practical buildability, and affordability.
What inspires you?
Regardless of where I travel, I’m always captivated by the skill of artists.
Mountains or the seaside?
Both. As long as I can retreat to nature every so often, I feel happier and healthier.
Any surprises?
People seem intrigued by my hand-drawn concepts, used to help visualise various stages of progress. I see this skill complementary to every other tool at my disposal.
Out of the office?
You’ll find me playing tennis or going for walks in Sydney parks or streets to replenish and seek inspiration. For me tennis offers a wonderful combination of fitness and friendship.
