PROJECT 2. Infinity Pool House
Drama and size, never-ending surprise.
Infinity Pool House is a three-storey home positioned on a dramatic cliff edge in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. The original (approximately) 300m2 residence was transformed from a single-storey bungalow into a wonderfully spacious three-storey family residence with inviting views over Rose Bay and beyond.
The owners wanted to further enhance the existing relationship between the home and the bay, including a strategy to unite the rear garden with the dramatic appeal of the bay and valley views. The allotment’s north-east orientation aligned the home with the cliff edge, providing welcome protection against an unapologetic summer sun, with an extended roof eave offering further defence from the elements.
The original brief includes part retention of the existing structure, but later evolved into a request for a more substantial home comprising five bedrooms, two study zones, multiple living and dining spaces, a recreation room, gym, media room, attic retreat and a 25-metre lap pool.
The new layout places common living areas on the ground floor with private bedrooms on the first floor. A central single staircase makes best use of available space and accessibility between levels.
A defining feature is the horizon edge pool, cantilevered by leveraging the house’s weight as counterbalance. A concealed ha-ha wall provides safety without obstructing the panorama.
The owners were particularly delighted with the hardwood door and window frames, a ‘concealed’ third level attic, a retaining wall accommodating a street front garden, and the facade to welcome guests upon entrance.
